Re-operation Rates and Complications for Scoliosis Surgery
A new study published in ‘Spine’ reviewed scoliosis surgery revision rates in 1,435 adolescents and young adults.
Results showed:
1. 5.2 percent of patients required re-operation.
2. 22 re-operations occurred within three months, 10 before one year, 12 before two years, 20 before five years and 10 after five years.
A new study by Bartley CE et. al. published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery analyzed 3,582 patients who underwent adolescent idiopathic scoliosis surgery from 1995 to 2014.
Findings were:
1. There were 192 major complications and 2.6 percent occurred during surgery.
2. Major peri-operative complication rate varied from 0 percent to 10.5 percent. with the complication rate decreasing over time.
3. There were 2,220 patients who reported two-year follow-up results, and 4 percent had complications; all but one of those patients underwent re-operations.
4. Most major complications were wound or instrumentation related.
