Scoliosis Over-Correction

It is possible for brace treatment to result in over-correction of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Brace treatment in skeletally immature children is the only effective nonoperative way for the control of curve progression. Alice has a 32-degree scoliosis. If she wore a well-made “regular” brace she would end up with a curve of about 32-40 degrees and a risk of further progression in adulthood. If she wore a badly made “regular” brace, her curve would have progressed beyond 45 degrees and she would have had major spinal surgery. With her LA 3D brace, her 32-degree curve is over-corrected to -14 degrees. If she continues to wear her brace full-time she should end up with a minimal curve of less than 15 degrees and never have to worry about her curve progressing in adulthood or needing spinal surgery in the future.
